Kevin Keegan to Receive Posthumous Freedom of Newcastle
Newcastle United legend Kevin Keegan is to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Newcastle posthumously, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the club and the city.
The announcement is a fitting tribute to one of the most influential figures in Newcastle United's modern history.
Keegan first captured supporters' hearts when he joined Newcastle as a player in 1982, helping the Magpies secure promotion to the First Division.
But it was his return as manager in 1992 that transformed Newcastle's fortunes.
Taking charge with the club facing the threat of relegation to the third tier, Keegan inspired a remarkable turnaround before guiding Newcastle into the Premier League.
His famous Entertainers side went on to challenge Manchester United for the title, playing an attacking brand of football that captured the imagination of supporters across the country.
Although Newcastle narrowly missed out on the Premier League title in 1995–96, Keegan's contribution to the club remains immense.
The Freedom of the City represents formal recognition of a man whose influence extended far beyond football results and helped shape Newcastle United's modern identity.
