Newcastle United are reportedly bringing in former Benfica scout Tomás Amaral as part of their continuing overhaul of the club's recruitment operation.

According to the Evening Chronicle, Newcastle have moved to appoint the Portuguese recruitment specialist, who has been linked with the discovery of Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernández during his time at Benfica.

Amaral worked in Benfica's scouting department between 2019 and 2023, a period during which the Portuguese club developed a reputation for identifying and recruiting emerging international talent.

He subsequently became sporting director at Spartak Moscow, adding senior management experience to a career that has also included scouting roles in Spanish football.

The reported appointment would represent another significant step in Newcastle's efforts to strengthen their recruitment structure under sporting director Ross Wilson.

With Premier League financial regulations placing increasing importance on identifying talent before transfer fees reach their peak, Newcastle are looking to improve their ability to discover promising players across international markets.

Fernández joined Benfica from River Plate in 2022 before moving to Chelsea for £106.8 million in January 2023. He subsequently joined Manchester City in September 2026 for £125 million, equalling the British transfer record.

Although Amaral has been associated with Benfica's recruitment of Fernández, his precise individual contribution has not been independently established.

Newcastle have not yet been independently confirmed as having formally announced the appointment.
