In another high scoring match at St James' Park where both sides led in the game, the scores were level after extra time. It was Newcastle who won the penalty shoot out and took their place in the 4th round of the FA Cup.

This was a match where both teams had plenty of chances to score and, as predicted, Bournemouth went all out for a win and played their part in the goal fest.

Eddie Howe’s pre-match press conference.

Match Summary

Newcastle lined up for the first time with both Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa in the side in a 4-4-1-1 formation, a major change from Eddie Howe's usual 4-3-3. Howe made six changes in all to the side that started against Leeds.

Bournemouth took the field for the first time since Antoine Semenyo's transfer to Manchester City. Manager Iraola fielded his strongest available team in a competition that they were determined to progress in.

Newcastle went into the game as the in form team on the back of three consecutive wins in the Premier League whilst Bournemouth had just one win in their last five games.

However, Bournemouth's high tempo and high press game caused the Newcastle defence problems throughout the match. Both teams had chances to stretch their lead when ahead and in the end an exciting game was decided on penalties in Newcastle's favour.

Goals & Key Moments

Newcastle started well and looked a threat in a 4-4-1-1 formation that had Wissa playing as the main striker with Woltemade in a role behind him.

The extra man in midfield for Newcastle, instead of the usual three, was evident as the home team had the majority of the early possession. Jacob Ramsey, enjoying one of his rare starts, took the opportunity to show that he is a player who is returning to the form that motivated his signing from Aston Villa.

Woltemade was another player who shone in the first half with his deep lying role allowing him to see more of the ball. His superb pass set Harvey Barnes free early in the second half to put Newcastle deservedly ahead.

Shortly after, Sven Botman hit the bar but almost immediately a weak header from Malik Thiaw gave Bournemouth possession. The ball was worked on to Evanilson who dragged a shot towards the far post, leaving Alex Scott with a tap in for the equaliser.

That was a cue for Bournemouth to come right back into the game and, with Newcastle's defence looking far from solid, it was the away side who now carried the greater threat.

After a Newcastle shot was cleared off the line, David Brooks broke at speed and put Bournemouth ahead with a curling a strike into the bottom corner. The home crowd where stunned, the pendulum of the game had changed and it was the away side who were now taking control of the game.

Brook's goal appeared to have won the game for Bournemouth, but Bruno Guimarães played in Tonali in injury time and he was brought down by goalkeeper, Dorde Petrovic. Gordon stepped up to score from the spot and take the game into extra time.

Newcastle looked to have won the game when Harvey Barnes headed in at the far post in the 118th minute only for Bournemouth to equalise two minutes later. More poor defending allowed Tavernier to get between Botman and Thiaw and send the ball past Ramsdale to take an already dramatic game to penalties.

Ramsdale was Newcastle's hero in the shoot out saving three penalties to see Newcastle through to the next round of the FA Cup. The home crowd played their part by making a cacophony of sound every time a Bournemouth player stepped up to take a penalty.

Match Verdict & Standout Players

After looking the better team in the first half Newcastle failed to capitalise on taking the lead early in the second period and it was Bournemouth who looked the more likely winners.

Eddie Howe's team have now conceded three goals in two consecutive home games and, although they still came out with wins, leaking goals has become a problem.

As in the match against Leeds, it was Harvey Barnes who kept Newcastle in the game with another double on the scoresheet. Barnes is now Newcastle's top scorer with eleven goals and in the form of his Newcastle career.

With a first leg semi-final in the Carabou Cup on Tuesday against Manchester City, Eddie Howe will have rued that this game went into extra time. The downside was another energy sapping game after the all out effort needed to beat Leeds on Wednesday.

The upside is that Newcastle are in the hat for the fourth round draw of the FA Cup.

Really...?

Aston Villa are also showing an interest in Newcastle United's Danish forward William Osula, 22, after being dealt a blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid's Spain Under-21 forward Gonzalo Garcia, 21. (Talksport)

A bye because Chelsea have been barred due for fraud would be good.

I also think that Pope Ramsdale may yet have more legs than many appear to believe. I'm not sure we've seen all that Ramsdale has to offer. We know his distribution is top notch, but his all round game was also excellent v Bournemouth. You need that consistently, and that's for him to deliver, but if he can, do we as a priority need more than Pope and Ramsdale? We do need to constantly be looking to upgrade and refresh the group, no question, but the important thing is it be done well, for both short and long term benifits.

CB is interesting. We have 4 top options, one who we have just lost, leaving us three, plus Miley, Lascelles,…

Does age bring the experience we could do with ?

Welbeck at 35 has just put Manu in their place.

Xhaka has been inspirational for Sunderland

Do we need experience or speed at CB ?
