NUFC: A Mess Of The Hierarchy's Own Making

Barry Paul Henry asked in an earlier comment today who of the present squad would get into a top 5-10 team and it got me thinking more specifically...

Who would get into a top six team?

Only Hall.

And that just shows that Jaissle is fighting an uphill battle whichever system or players he chooses.

2/3 seasons ago we had Isak, Gordon, Bruno, Tonali, Hall and Schar... and Pope, Burn, Jo and Tino would have had good shouts as well.

Now only Hall.

If anything shows how our expectations should be adjusted it is that sobering reality.

This is why my view is we can pull Jaissle up for formations - but he didn't spend the c£500M we have in the previous two windows and he can only try to get the best out of what he has. And it isn't a lot.

The only direct influence on signings he has had have been arguably our two best performers; Dedic and Nico, and in any event they are aged 24 and 25 with plenty of first team experience - unlike the inexperienced young uns signed before he arrived.

Who would come as our next manager?

If Jaissle is given the chop we won't be fishing in a pond for the likes of Unai Emery that we did when PIF first bought us.

Nor, I doubt, would any of the other young managers with big ambitions like Hurzler consider taking the job.

They would be on a hiding to nothing.

NUFC are a team stripped of its best players, with aging players past their best, poor signings and young players who aren't deemed as ready yet for the PL.

The whole football world knows it, and they also know that we can't pay top money and top wages to attract top players, and we can't pay any top players that we develop the money they could earn elsewhere.

We are right back to being a stepping stone club.

A big opportunity for an ambitious in demand manager? Hardly.

And yet...

We fans are still in a frame of mind from the heady early days of PIF and Eddie, two CL qualifications and a first domestic cup win in 70 years.

It would be almost impossible for any manager to get us back on that track any time soon.

Being owned by PIF now counts for very little and the truth is, unless there are somehow massive changes in our income or a relaxation of financial rules, the harsh truth is we have probably already hit the ceiling under PIF and Eddie Howe on how far NUFC can go.

Eddie was wise enough to know that and IMO without a doubt he resigned because he knew the next road led backwards and downwards and his reputation would suffer.

As much as we fans say "we have to accept the reality of where we are now"...

That has already gone out of the window with many - even though Jaissle has a squad miles off what Eddie had and we are currently 8th in the PL.

My bet is if Jaissle went any new manager of the calibre we could attract would be as much of a risk as Jaissle was and is.

Our stock in attracting a top manager and top players has plummeted.

Every day that passes, every criticism of the past two years signings that continues...

Puts the blame for where the club is now firmly at the door of the those who were involved in strategy and recruitment. David Hopkinson and Ross Wilson.

Jaissle is the patsy facing the media and wrath of the fans for not floating a sinking ship within relative minutes of manning the pumps.

Fans can't hammer the signings but expect our new young manager to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse in a matter of weeks and just twelve competitive matches, especially when the majority of his battle hardened and experienced troops have been out injured.

The club currently, IMO, is in a mess of it's own making and the blame lies squarely at Hopkinson and Wilson's door. Not Jaissle's.

Whether he would deserve to be sacked or not...

The mess we are in will only be seen as even bigger by the current squad, any player targets and any manager of any calibre that we target.

The truth often hurts.

And it has hurt me to face the unpalatable truth of where NUFC now.

Looking at our squad moving forward. Who in an ideal world likely leaves after this season and should be replaced? Who are we happy with. I dont see much if any january buisness.

So the end of the season

Likely or possible departures

GK Pope free

CB Schar free

CM Willock free

RW Murphy free

The issue there is we really should have sold one of willock or murphy if we couldn't or are prepared to tie them down on new contracts. Who knows willock and murphy may sign new deals , but either way they are on that list of players that need replacing next . Selling willock for maybe 8m in january i dont think will happen t…

I wouldn't say it is messy. Its far too early for that. Anderson, Wissa and Wolt were terribly poor signings though. One out, and two in, have blotted three pages of our copy book. It's a shame. We got cornered, and beaten up.

@Lochinvar I saw the penalty claim on Motd2. Isak made no fuss at all. For me it's a clear penalty and I don't understand why VAR would say there's no clear and obvious error. It was both clear and obvious and Liverpool lost. The fact that this pleases me makes me a very bad man! 🤣🤣🤣
