Supporting NUFC is not just about the team; it is about the passionate fan base that surrounds the club and area. That passionate support has endured for decades and is legendary.
Ed Harrison, the founder of NUFCBlog played a pivotal role in giving an online voice to legions of us passionate Newcastle United fans . With his unwavering dedication to the club, Ed created a platform that brought supporters together to celebrate our shared love for Newcastle United. This post pays tribute to Ed Harrison and the lasting impact of NUFCblog.com over its 18 years of the ups and downs of the club, from Mike Ashley's ownership to PIF's takeover.
The Birth of NUFC Blog
Founded in 2007, NUFCblog.com emerged from Ed Harrison's vision of a gathering place for Newcastle United fans. He understood that Newcastle United is a unique club. ingrained in the culture of many, and he wanted to establish a community that provided a platform for their passion. Within months of its launch, NUFCblog.com had attracted thousands of visitors, becoming a trusted source for match previews, news, and fan opinions.
Ed's commitment to fostering connections among fans was clear. Stories and discussions about pivotal matches were frequent, such as the thrilling 4-4 draw against Arsenal in 2011, which showcased the unpredictable nature of the game and the depths of despair and elation of being a Newcastle fan. He aimed to bridge distances, proving that regardless of where fans resided, they could feel connected through their love for the club.
Ed's Passion for Newcastle United
Ed Harrison was more than a blogger; he was on Newcastle United book's as a young player, and an ardent supporter even after his work took him to the USA. His posts took fans on an emotional ride, reflecting their own highs and lows of supporting Newcastle United.
Ed's posts were always well written, factual and rarely highly opinionated. Not for Ed the screaming headlines and fake news that so dominates football media and the online world in general. He left it to his community of posters to state their own opinions, which were often widely varied and hotly disputed. Exactly what made his blog so passionate and entertaining.
Ed's Battle with Cancer & His Determination to 'Carry On'
Even after Ed was diagnosed with prostrate cancer his determination to keep writing articles never wavered. He kept us regularly posted on his treatment and health but, as time went on, it became evident that this was a battle he might not win. Even during what must have been his darkest days, when his health and energy must have made it increasingly tiresome to write articles, he still posted, albeit not as frequently. His strength of character and passion never wavered and he continued to lead the blog almost up to his sad passing in June 2024.
Tragically, he was not here to experience the joy of our first domestic trophy success in 70 years when we beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2025 League Cup final. So many of Ed's generation, who were born in the 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond, supported the Toon for decades and never lived to see that great day. How he would have loved it, and how he would have celebrated!
Continuing Ed's Legacy
As a poster for c15 years, under the name Bill's Son, Ed's blog became part of my daily life as I'm sure it did for many of his community. It would be my first port of call in the morning and my last at night, not to mention the many 'call ins' during the day. "Are you ever off that bl**dy blog" was a shriek from my wife that constantly rang in my ears. Was I the only one? I bet not!
When Neil made what I am sure was the difficult decision to close the blog down I decided I would pick up Ed's baton and carry it forward onto this new forum with a blog dedicated to his memory. And, far as is possible, I want to replicate the style and format of Ed's blog so that the community he built up over the years will 'feel at home' and still feel his presence. The old saying 'don't fix what isn't broken' definitely applies to Ed's legendary simple blog format.
In closing... I am genuinely humbled that so many of Ed's blog community have supported me by registering their desire to continue visiting the new forum, whether as a member and poster or simply to read the articles, comments, views and opinions.
I will do my best to repay that support with a blog that Ed would have approved of.
Thanks again,
Colin Parker
