Toon Going from Bad to Worse

Another lead lost as we lose 3-1 at Brentford

For the second game running we were fortunate to score the first goal and instead of using it as a springboard to go on and win we added another game to our away hoodoo to make it nine without a win.

It wasn't just the score that was a carbon copy of the West Ham game, the performance rubber stamped it.

Barnes goal - superbly taken - was the only shot we had on target in the first half and in the second half, other than a brief spell where we dominated possession, we never looked a goal threat.

I thought Burn was lucky to get away with the first penalty appeal when their lad was booked for a dive. Burn's head and eyes in the air after the lad went down was proof to me he thought it would be a pen.

The second time it didn't look like a penalty but there was no way the ref or VAR were going to back down on the pen decision and off Burn went for a second yellow.

The sending off solves one problem for Eddie; Hall will now play LB against Man City at SJP - but Eddie has a load of other more serious problems to work on after our fifth defeat in eleven Prem games.

As others have rightly said...

We've never really hit form this season and even our cup wins, other than possibly USG away, have been welcome but definitely not wonderful.

Yet again today we looked woefully short of attacking ideas and flair, almost going through the motions instead of attacking with drive, purpose and intent.

We continually gave the ball away, overplayed passes when we had possession, and wasted the few breaks we had with a poor final ball.

I am not going to criticise individual players because this was a collectively bad team performance which, after the same was served up at West Ham, is a huge concern.

IMO our 433 looks jaded and, without our previous all action high press, it is becoming far too easy for teams to play through our lines and put us under pressure.

Our league form so far, and especially the last two away games, has given us fans plenty to be concerned about and the knives will be being hoyed in all directions by some.

I have no doubt that Eddie is just as, if not more, concerned than we are and that he will be doing some serious thinking about every aspect of our game during the international break.

The table doesn't make good reading for Eddie and his coaching team, Toon players, us fans... or PIF.

Firstly I don't think either of Burns tackles were pens, but the first if it had been given, I'd live with it, the second was outside the box.

That being said, I don't know why He was still on the pitch, he had a poor game, as did Murphy and Wolt.

We are adapting our whole game to accommodate Wolt dropping deep, and we lose a lot our attack when we do that.

He needs Wolt higher up, someone for Murphy to aim for.

We have no wide play without the full backs getting involved.

Burn tries, will overlap, but then is well out of position not to mention is rarely given the ball when doing so.

Tripps stopped giving good options down the flank two seasons ago offers nothing. Even his set pieces are woeful.

Hall and Tino need to be first choice when fit and available. Rotate here and there but they are our best at full back.

Burn and Botman rotate at LCB.

Thiaw is first choice but rotate with Schar as needed.

Our midfield and attacking play is so poor. We over complicate it. Constant turnovers by trying to force 2 yard passes in the thick of the defense right…

Looks to me like EH didn't learn anything from the WH match. Same set-up; guess wat, same result. A particular failing in my opinion was not taking off Burn shortly after the first penalty incident. Murphy had a poor game and should also have been taken off at 60 minutes. The big question now is how is EH going to turn it around?

Very tough to change your style and approach, especially mid campaign, fighting on so many fronts, with so little time on the training pitch to work on things. I think, for what it's worth, we should focus on getting Wolt playing higher up the pitch, and also rotate him with Osula and Gordon until Wissa is back, and also, as said earlier, rotate more all throughout the side, especially away.
