Woltemade: Wissa Injury a Blessing in Disguise

Nick Woltemade arrived at Newcastle United in August 2025 from VfB Stuttgart in what became a club-record £69M signing.

It followed the failure of the club to sign other striker targets; Liam Delap. Jao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko.

Whoever arrived, the pressure to replace the departing Isak and get anywhere near his influence and goal tally would be immense.

The Toon weren't a one man team, but Isak was the type of player who could pull a goal out of nothing. Despite fans turning against him for his appalling behaviour the fact is many fans were worried that losing him could set our season's ambitions back.

The deadline day arrival of Yoane Wissa calmed some of those fears after his 19 goals for Brentford last season - all from open play. The plan was to start with Wissa and ease Woltemade into the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

That plan changed with Wissa's knee injury on international duty before he'd kicked a ball for the Magpies.

After using Anthony Gordon and Will Osula at CF, Woltemade was given his debut at SJP against Wolves. International duty had meant he'd hardly trained with the squad.

The rest is history, albeit a short one.

  • He scored the only goal and winner on his debut.

  • He became the first Newcastle player to score on both his first Premier League and first Champions League start.

  • He scored in each of his first three home Premier League appearances for Newcastle, joining club legends like Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand in that category.

Big Nick has not only provided goals, he has also proved to be the team player and focal point at CF that Isak wasn't. His ability to hold up the ball, bring his teammates into play with exquisite 'one two's', plus a wide range of passing ability have been a revelation.

And, of course, his height gives us the aerial threat from a forward player that we've lacked. Our wingers can now whip in crosses knowing that Big Nick will be there - IMO we haven't given him enough of those crosses, but that will come I'm sure.

So, the silver lining to Wissa's injury is that Woltemade has been thrown in at the deep end and come up leaping like a dolphin. He's proven to be the real deal and looking a steal at £69M.

With Wissa not far off being fit we are going to have two top ST's that will threaten any defence in the Prem.

Not only that, but they also have totally different playing styles which will be a nightmare for defenders whether they play together or individually.

That nightmare for defenders starts again today with the visit of Fulham.

Don't bet against Big Nick scoring. I've got a fiver on it.

Comments welcome.

If the likes of the BBC and Sky appear to have agreed to censor their match summaries that's corrupt

They may be trying to dumb down referee and VAR abuse on a wokey way to avoid upsetting their feelings.

The only outcome is that it raises more suspicion of why it's happening

Yesterday's ref was more than suspicious. On occasions Fulham players were giving Nick a medical examination in front of the ref and he saw what was going on and ignored it. He even tried to explain it away.

He chose not to apply the laws of the game so no wonder his integrity is questioned.

Elsewhere there's loads of comments that the ref in the Brentford game gave Liverpool every chance to salvage the game. Nearly 3 minutes time beyond the added time. We couldn't get seconds last season.

Maybe we need a hooter
