Bruno Saga Ending Today?Who Is Our Next Captain?

With every hack from the Athletic to The Times reporting that Bruno will have a medical today it looks as if this saga is finally reaching its end.

A reported fee of £70M with £10M adds on's will see our captain joining Arsenal.

NOTE: Chronicle now reporting Bruno due to arrive in La Manga today - who do we believe? This is getting more ridiculous by the hour.

Who leads us next?

Dan Burn will likely take the armband as club captain but despite being a current England international he isn't guaranteed to start every game and may not even be a first choice for new manager Mathias Jaissle.

The fact that there is no obvious choice as captain if BDB isn't selected shows how lacking in leadership qualities our squad currently is.

IMO not one of the players other than Dan Burn has those qualities or would instantly earn the respect needed as captain.

Bruno may not have been a fist shaking captain in the mould of the likes of Bobby Moncur or Shearer; his way was to lead by example in giving 100% in every game and being the dynamo that got the wheels turning.

Newcastle are likely to turn out one of the youngest teams in the Prem this season and our bairns need a man or three alongside them to lead the way and offer them guidance and encouragement in what could turn out to be a difficult and challenging season.

That is another factor for Wilson and Jaissle to consider as, flush with cash from our big sales, they need to bring in more signings and especially to a midfield that could lose all three of last season's main men if Jo departs for Saudi.

Expect the rush to start

In a day short of three weeks the new season kicks off against Liverpool.

On paper the team we could put out from the current squad looks as thin as Twiggy in her prime.

I'd be surprised if more than one, at the most two, of our young signings starts the match and even then expecting them to fire from the off against a team of Liverpool's strength is a stretch.

We desperately need some more seasoned players in and I'm expecting that rush to start this week and, with Hornicek now announced, it wouldn't surprise me if another two followed in quick succession - and up to four before the season kicks off.

Two of those signings need to be mids with a RB, a CB and possibly even another winger thrown in as well.

This week, possibly today, will also finally see the official club announcement of Jaislle's contract after the paperwork was delayed to cement his new appointment.

So, hang on to ya hats...

The NUFC waltzer is geared to speed up and spin even faster.

Jo, Pope and possibly Willock could yet fall off.

And new lads aplenty could be jumping on.

Nowt is standing still at SJP...

Except Shearer and Wor Jackie's statues - and even they have been seen to raise their eyebrows.
