Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is reportedly willing to hold talks with Manchester United about becoming their next head coach if the Old Trafford club decides to replace Michael Carrick.

According to Sky Sports, Howe would be interested in discussing the position should it become available, raising the possibility of a return to Premier League management just three months after leaving Newcastle.

The speculation has intensified following Manchester United's 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, which extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions.

Howe reportedly has an influential admirer at Old Trafford.

The Guardian reported on Friday that United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, regards Howe as his preferred candidate to replace Carrick.

Wilcox is understood to value Howe's Premier League experience and his achievements at Newcastle, where he secured two Champions League qualifications and ended the club's 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the 2025 Carabao Cup.

However, United's head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, reportedly favours Julian Nagelsmann, suggesting there is no unanimous choice within the club's hierarchy.

Howe left St James' Park in July and has yet to take another managerial position.

For Newcastle supporters, the possibility of seeing their former manager take charge at Old Trafford would certainly attract considerable attention.

There has been no official approach or appointment announced, and Carrick remains Manchester United's manager for now.
