Lucas Bergvall: Why Bid Now?

Reports that the club have had a £46M bid for 20 year old Lucas Bergvall rejected by Spurs have baffled me. Why have the club waited until now??

Why wasn't he part of the Tonali deal?

Whether you agree with the club signing another 20 year old, and whether that player should be Bergvall, if Wilson and Eddie were interested in him surely the time when our hand was strongest was during the Tonali deal.

The alternat6ive is that our interest surfaced after Tonali had departed but if that is the case then you have to question the degree of pre-window planning.

Seeing as we held out for top dollar from Spurs for Tonali it is hardly surprising that Spurs have knocked back out first offer of £46M for a player they signed a couple of years ago for just £8.5M.

With Tonali gone and Spurs obviously aware of the Bruno rumours it doesn't take the brains of Einstein to calculate that the cockerels see us as chicken feed to be hen pecked.

Spurs will want top dollar for Bergvall and I could see them demanding £55M-£60M.

At that price surely there are better options around and even at £46M Bergvall, who I actually have been impressed with in the games I've watched, that fee seems on the high side.

Kids play?

At the end of last season before Gordon and Tonali departed most fans wanted the club to sign players from abroad who often give far better value for money than PL players or the targets the Big 6 chase.

Younger players with the potential to develop was also a common theme - but note the words 'potential to develop'.

I'm sounding like a parrot... but when we've lost experienced players like Gordon, Tonal and Trippier, with the likes of Burn, Schar and Pope the wrong side of 30, and a possibility that Bruno could ask to leave... we need the finished article, not potential.

Asking 18 and 20 year olds to step up to the first team squad and give consistent performances if selected to play in the Prem is a big risk.

If Spurs had accepted our offer that would have been c£130M spent on kids with not one of them a player to set fans hearts racing that they would take the PL by storm.

I'd love to be proved wrong, in fact I pray that I am.

But a transfer window that was deemed 'critically important to get right' isn't inspiring me with a huge dollop of confidence that it is going in the right direction.

Unless the club have a statement experienced top drawer player up their sleeve then this window so far is, for me, a gamble that risks not paying off.

Plus, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not impressed at all with making an offer for Bergvall now - it smacks of bad judgement or a last minute decision to compete with Forest.

Four weeks from tomorrow we face Liverpool and Isak and two games later Spurs and Tonali.

I hope my doubts are unfounded and that we smash the pair of them.

But, I can't deny that I have doubts.
