Newcastle United Injury Update: Eight Players Set to Miss Hull Game
Updated: 1 day ago
Newcastle United's injury problems have worsened ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Hull City, with Matthias Jaissle expected to be without eight first-team players.
In his presser Jaissle confirmed ahead of the game that Newcastle aren't expecting any of their injured players back for Hull, leaving him with some difficult selection decisions following Monday's 4–1 defeat at Leeds.
So who is currently injured — and when could they return?
Anthony Elanga
Elanga missed the Leeds defeat and is undergoing an MRI scan to establish the extent of his injury.
Reports suggest the problem is in the hamstring area, with fears that he could potentially miss around six to eight weeks, although Jaissle has stressed that Newcastle are still waiting for a clearer diagnosis.
Amar Dedić
Dedić will also miss the Hull game but will be fit after the international break.
The defender has been reported to have a hamstring problem.
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey suffered a thigh injury during the warm-up at Leeds and had to withdraw before kick-off.
Jaissle has confirmed he won't be available against Hull.
Nico González
González was forced off during the first half at Elland Road after suffering concussion.
He will miss Saturday's game under concussion protocols.
Joelinton
Joelinton remains sidelined with a thigh/muscle injury and won't return against Hull.
Dan Burn
Burn remains unavailable with an ankle injury but is close to a return.
William Osula
Osula remains out after suffering a foot injury.
There has at least been some encouraging news surrounding his recovery.
Reports indicate that he didn't suffer the fracture initially feared, has discarded his protective boot and has returned to fitness work.
Ewen Jaouen
Jaouen has also been recovering from an ankle injury but Saturday has come too soon for a return to the squad.
How Much Will Newcastle's Injuries Hurt Jaissle?
Eight unavailable players would cause problems for any Premier League manager and especially when all but Jaouen are the experienced players that Jaissle's young squad is in desperate need of.
And, the timing of this injury crisis is particularly difficult for Jaissle.
Not only is he attempting to introduce a new tactical system while simultaneously working without several players who could be important to it.... but he is also trying to recover from the 4-1 hammering doled out by Leeds on Monday.
To get key players back and bolster the squad the international break therefore couldn't come at a much better time.
But first Newcastle have to get past an unbeaten, physical and well organised Hull side who will have their tails up, especially after watching how the Toon collapsed and were overran in the first half against Leeds.
With eight players out and the team still very much a work in progress, Jaissle and the eleven who run out at SJP tomorrow afternoon need to be on top form and show far more aggression and attacking intent if the Leeds performance isn't to be repeated.
