Will Newcastle United Buy & Sell Players in the January Transfer Window?

Eddie Howe has said that Newcastle need to be 'really careful' over making January signings due to the effect it may have on PSR and the summer transfer window.

No signings were made in the previous two January windows and unless the club have lined up a big surprise signing any spending is likely to be modest at best.

The two positions where Newcastle have been rumoured to show interest are at centre back, right back and midfield where the prominent names have been Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, who is capable of playing as a centre-back and full-back and AZ Alkmaar's midfielder Kees Smit.

Both are aged just 19 so they may not be seen as immediate challengers for a first team start. With AZ reluctant sellers of Smit and Real Madrid also reported to be interested, Methalie may be the more likely signing.

On departures; Frankfurt apparently remain keen on Will Osula for a fee rumoured to be in the region of £30M and sources say a five year contract at £40K per week has been agreed in advance of a deal. Aston Villa are also said to be interested in Osula.

If Osula does go let's hope he doesn't turbo charge his career and value in the same way that Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh did after departing for new clubs and regular appearances.

Anderson and Minteh are now jointly worth £100M more than the fees we received and would be first team starters at Newcastle.. We literally cannot afford any more of those mistakes, whether because of PSR rules or any other reason.

Joe Willock has admirers from Premiership clubs, Kieran Trippier is 35 and no longer first choice, Emile Krafth is 31, and together with possibly Fabian Schar the club may be prepared to listen to offers. Schar surely would only be sold if a replacement was lined up as Sven Botman's poor injury record could leave us short on CB's.

Talksport have apparently made the claim that Newcastle are looking at selling Nick Woltemade because he does not suit our style of play. If there was a click bait of the month award Talksport would win it hands down with that nonsense.

That nonsense apart there have been very few incoming or outgoing Newcastle United transfer rumours in the media. It would definitely seem that our January transfer business will be nowhere near as hectic as our nine game fixture list.

Do you think there should be any priority signings or sales in January, and if so in what positions and who would you like to see come and go?
