Matthias Jaissle Takes The Helm

Newcastle United have finally confirmed Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, succeeding Eddie Howe.

He is now with the players in La Manga and has just a tad over two weeks to prepare the side for the seasons opener against Liverpool on 23rd August.

The appointment marks the start of a new era at St James' Park, and while many fans hadn't previously heard about the 38-year-old German, his coaching CV suggests Newcastle have recruited one of Europe's brightest young managers.

A Coach on the Rise

Jaissle's playing career was cut short through injury, but he quickly established himself as one of Germany's most promising young coaches.

Matthias made his name within the Red Bull football system, leading Red Bull Salzburg to back-to-back Austrian league titles while earning praise for his aggressive, high-energy style of play.

He then moved to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, where he enjoyed remarkable success, winning consecutive AFC Champions League titles and further enhancing his reputation as one of the game's emerging tactical minds.

What Can Newcastle Fans Expect?

Jaissle's teams play with intensity.

Expect a high press, quick transitions and players who work relentlessly without the ball.

His philosophy has similarities to the football Newcastle fans enjoyed under Eddie Howe, but with an even greater emphasis on pressing high up the pitch and controlling games through energy and movement.

He's also known for developing young players, something that could prove invaluable as Newcastle continue to build for the future with four youngsters signed this summer who fans will hope to see progressing quickly.

A Huge Challenge Awaits

Jaissle arrives at one of the most difficult moments since the PIF takeover.

The club is rebuilding after a disappointing campaign, the loss of key players, and the departure of Eddie Howe and his coaching team.

Even though Howe came in for criticism last season, with some fans calling for his head, replacing one of the most successful managers in the clubs history will not be easy.

As it stands, a squad that finished 12th last season has been seriously weakened and the four young signings in no way can be expected to replace the quality and leadership lost.

The key now for Ross Wilson is to quickly bring in more experienced 'oven ready' first team signings that the squad, and Jaissle, desperately need.

Matthias also needs to connect quickly with supporters in the way that Eddie Howe did when he took the reins. That connection was pivotal in Eddie's early days as manager.

Wor Matt seems to be an ebullient, in your face, enthusiastic character who also carries that energetic DNA onto the touchline... shades of the great man KK there?

We fans are dying for some inspiration after the trauma of the last few weeks and one thing is for certain... the roof will be raised in welcome at SJP on the 23rd August.

How fitting it would be if on the day we celebrated the life and times of the old Messiah Keven Keegan...

That the day marked the the reign of a man who could walk in KK's footsteps and become our new Messiah. We can dream.

Why Newcastle Chose Matthias

Newcastle's hierarchy and PIF will have known all about Jaissle's leadership qualities, tactical approach and ability to improve players, especially in the Saudi league.

At just 38, he also brings a totally fresh approach to the new era ahead of us and, coupled with the clubs strategy of signing young players with potential, Jaissle brings the excitement to SJP that youth always creates.

Having said that, his appointment is undoubtedly a gamble, but so was Eddie Howe's in 2021—and we all know how that turned out.

Final Thoughts

Matthias Jaissle won't be judged on his success in Austria or Saudi Arabia.

He'll be judged on what he achieves at Newcastle United.

The Premier League is a different challenge altogether, but if he can bring his attacking philosophy, develop the next generation of talent and restore belief around the club, Newcastle supporters could once again have every reason to dream.

For now, one thing is certain: a fascinating new era has begun for the Toon Army.

We don't expect miracles, but we'll grab them gratefully if they come along.

We'll forgive mistakes and defeats as long as we see 100% effort, front foot attacking football, and signs that the manager and squad are in unity and moving forward.

There may be some punishing lessons along the way, and that might even be in the first few games of the season.

But, let's remember that it took Eddie Howe a few games to get his first win and we ended up finishing 10th from a relegation position.

So, let's not panic too early if results aren't immediate.

Matthias Jaissle has a massive job and responsibility on his young shoulders.

Let's all get right behind him and his young team and give them all the support and encouragement that us Geordies are renowned for.

The new era has begun. The old is history.
